I have a busy month ahead with studio days, weddings and maternity shoots all booked. I have now made myself even busier by setting myself a personal project! I will be taking a photo each day through the month of March and uploading it to this blog and my flickr page. Each image will be created using either natural/available light and/or the use of just one flash gun.

365 day projects are very popular among photographers, so this is a mini project in comparison, hopefully this will help me maintain a higher standard of work with fresh ideas. I can't wait to start!!!
Most of my work up till now has used natural light for exposure but things are about to change!
I took delivery of a few new tools over the past week, a new Canon camera packed with features I have not had before, lighting kit consisting of flash stand and umbrella and the final piece to my technical puzzle was a set of remote flash triggers - let the fun begin!
The first little project I set myself was to try 'lowkey' lighting, leaving nearly all of the image black and using the flash to highlight just one side or an outline of the subject.
My first attempt was this self portrait with the light source coming directly from the left (sorry about the cheesy pose).
My next test was to try something a little more dramatic. I positioned the subject (yes me again) between the camera and the flash. This results in just a very small amount light being seen by the camera.
After a few more tests of lighting from different angles, and me in different cheesy poses, I turned to my faithful friend - Snoop! If you have checked out my Flickr page you will know by now that I love taking photographs of my dog, and when I'm trying out new equipment or I'm stuck for something or someone to shoot I always turn to him.
To be honest he's a better model than me!
